Gaija dog, a mixed breed , welcomes us into the plot and My shows around. She calls it Myggebo, children*s names on the spot as mom loves so deeply. One Christmas Eve, she got them a sign saying "Myggebo mansion".
We sit down on a sofa in one of the large, bright room with stove. Through the window, the autumn sun lit up the creaking wooden floor and My talks quietly about his trip.
My Gunther grew up in Småland coast, Kalmar, in the early 1960s. She lived with her parents and two older siblings, a brother and a sister. Papa John was a dentist, mom Sonja housewife. Both belonged to the cream of society, mostly through the father*s involvement in Freemasonry.
- He was a very central figure, popular and great fun. But what happened behind the ironed curtains were not always so funny. Like so often, there was an alcohol problem, but certainly not in public. So it was well ... tough, she explains.
- Their drinking affected me more than my siblings, who left home before it accelerated. Especially mom became very personality changed and it was scary to see. On several occasions, she threatened that she would kill herself and I was completely hysterical, held her and cried and then she would say that she stayed on my account.
Gruesome, of course. My hated alcohol, already promised that 5-6-year-old that she would never drink.
She was not very old when she realized the importance of being able to maintain facades, allowing different aspects of one*s character shine through, depending on the situation or person.
- I lived a double life and kept me often from home. Had a lot of secrets and learned what that suited themselves and not. Outside the home, I was a tough tomboy, that was a defense mechanism. I*ve noticed as a therapist, it is common for women who develop problems with alcohol have such a history. At the same time I was very much in the stable.
The parents did not drink every day, but when dad closed the practice for the weekend My knew that it would soon be underway. As a teenager, she joined NTO (temperance organization Nationaltemplarorden, later IOGT-NTO) and trained as a youth leader.
It was a relief to the age of 17 to leave Kalmar Lund and an education to recreation, but it was out of the frying pan into the fire. The newfound independence led to crises and panic attacks, something she had been taught was ugly - about My parents were sad thought she would pull themselves together.
She received sedatives prescribed by a school doctor, but did not take the medication. Therapy was out of the question, it had to go by itself.
