Well, I was intrigued, and I thought I’d like to find a way to express this idea photographily. I have very good galleries, the mycrosin gallery, in North Ampson. I contacted Rich Machealson, and I told him the story I just told you, and I said I’d like to shoot portraits of a lot of people who would be invited to come to have their portrait shot by me, as a secret or hidden or fantacy self.

You’ll see a 40-minute-video which is the condensation of those conversations on the shooting set, the photographing set, of 25 of those people. And it’s gonna take40 minutes, you’ll see these people who were… I think … very generous of heart. And presented themselves to me to be photographed. You’ll see the conversations, you’ll see the photographing process, and at the end of the film, a couple of Spocks will be here to talk about it. Thank you very much.

Now I’d like to invite our special guest to the stage. Leonard Nimoy will be interviewed by Zach Quinto. We asked Zach here tonight because he and Leonard have one important essential character in common, both of them had fathers who were barbors. They also happen to have both played Spock in the epic series Star Trek. So I wondered if maybe Mr. Spock represents Zach’s secret self?

In addition to that role in which he was great at challenging the senverse(?) of humour and brilliance of Leonard Nimoy Spock, Zach has also received enormous claims of many film and television performances including Adam Coffin on 24, and Sylar on Heroes. Zach Quinto’s gonna appear at the upcoming film Margin Call, whichopens on October, which he also produced. And on the new FX series American Horror Story. And we’re all looking forward to seeing him again as Mr. Spock in the new Star Trek in 2013.

LN: Welcome Zachary.
ZQ: Thank you for having me. 感谢让我参与。
LN: There’s a couple of words about the results of the project. The image that we photographed were shown at the Mexichosen Museum of contemporary art , the exhibition was for about 6 months. And it was also shown and still are at the Mycrosin Gallery in North Ampton. And there was a catalogue that couldn’t be available here tonight. The catalogue be shown along with the 40-minute-video.
首先说两句关于这次项目的结果。我们拍摄的照片在Mexichosen当代艺术博物馆展出了6个月，并在北Ampton的Mycrosin画廊展出至今，还有一个今晚没能在这里展出的画册，以及这个40分钟的影片。
LN: So hello, zachary?
ZQ: Hi, Leonard. How are you?
LN: Okey, son.

LN: Zachary’s father was a … Zachary的父亲是一个。。。
ZQ: Hairdresser. 发型师。
LN: My dad was a barber. 我爸爸是个剃头匠。
ZQ: Times were different though, I came to see it on the different time, right? When hairdresser were bastard or anything… 时代不同了。不同年代想法也不一样。你们那时候觉得发型师很奇怪什么的。。。
LN: No, no, no. in my day, when I was a kid, a long time ago, we didn’t have hairdressers…the hairdressers were for women, but if you were a guy, you never havehairdressers, to guys were barbers.
在我还是小孩子的时候，那是很久以前了，我们没有发型师。。。不，发型师是为女人服务的，男人从来不找发型师，而是找剃头匠。
My dad started barboring when he was maybe 15 or 16 years old, and that’s what he did for his whole life. I think when he retired, he was all the way up to about75 for haircut.
我爸爸从十五六岁的时候就开始理发了，一辈子都是理发师。当他退休的时候，他已经理发理到75岁了。

ZQ: Did he cut your hair all the time? Was he the only person who cut your hair? 他总是给你剪头发吗？只有他给你剪头发吗？
LN: He also shave faces. 他也刮脸。
ZQ: My dad used to get my hair cut, he used to scare me when I was a kid. But now I like it. 我爸爸总是给我剪头发，我小时候总是很害怕。但是现在我喜欢了。
LN: I used to see little kids coming to my dad for haircut, they would be crying. 我以前也见到小孩子找我爸爸剪头发，他们总是哭。
ZQ: Yeah, I used to freak out, it was my dad, and I think it was because my dad was the proper traitor of the act that used to terrify me so much. Trying to put me at ease at the very way he worked.
我以前吓坏了，虽然那是我爸爸，但是我想我爸爸是最合适做这件事的人，那时候我很害怕剪头发，他剪的时候想方设法让我自在一点。
LN: My dad and I had very good memory.

ZQ: My dad was like, which you like Pittsburgh in the 80s, you know, so he was like hair spray, Pittsburgh, these ladies there like to wear hair like bagen(?) stuff, you know. 我爸爸是80年代匹兹堡风格，喷发胶，匹兹堡哪里的女士喜欢像戴假发一样的发型。
But yeah, that was something we had in common, besides other things.
这是我们其他共同点之外的一个共同点。
LN: Your dad did men or women? 你爸爸给男士还是女士做头发？
ZQ: Yeah, he did mostly women though, he did mostly like… a lot of the Pittsburgh socialites, he ended up working at a fancy pan(?) salon. 他主要给女士做头发，他给。。。很多匹兹堡社会名流做头发，他在一家豪华的美发沙龙工作。
LN: Where they call Big Hair?
ZQ: Big Hair. Yeah, totally.

ZQ: You know, we live in the culture that’s pretty obsessed with celebrity, and pretty obsessed with the lives of celebrities, and the differentiation between the characters we play and the people that we are. It becomes a little bit murkier, I think , in the world. It’s intersting.
我们现在的文化充斥着明星、名人的生活、我们扮演的角色与我们本人之间的区别。世界都变得更灰暗了。
How do you see that change that you were living with the character Spock for a lot of years, and you were sort of finding yourself on the larger stage, right? But at different time，we’re of different generations, so what do you experience that in terms of exposure, in terms of peoples’ awarance of you…
你怎么看待这种变化？你多年带着Spock这个角色的标签，但是你也在更大的舞台上找寻自己的位置，对吗？我们是两代人了，现在时代不同了，你在媒体曝光、在人们当中的认知度。。。这些方面有什么体会？

LN: Well, briefly, I have been acting in front of the television for about 15 years before Spock. I started in 1949 or 1950, and Spock was in 1966. But I never had a role that penetrated that way, that penetrated people’s consciousness that way. I never played any role that consisted me for a long period of time.
在出演Spock这个角色之前我已经在电视机前表演了15年。我从1949年、1950年出道，1966年才接演Spock。但是这是我第一个深入人心的角色，让观众记住了我。我从没出演过有这样持久影响力的角色。

So when the Spock thing happened, I was totally unprepared for it. I just simply didn’t know… I said to you the first time we met. The idea where I was getting to. I didn’t know where I was getting to. And then very quickly, it started to down(?) on me. I had to change my phone number, I had to avoid people, I was in search of privacy, privacy went away. I found myself avoiding eye contact walking on the street, wearing a hat. I was trying to isolate myself because there was so much attention coming .and the character really had a strong impact.
所以当Spock的影响发生的时候我完全没有心理准备。我根本不知道。。。我们第一次见面的时候我告诉过你。我不知道事情会变成什么样。但是很快我就受到了影响。我不得不换了电话号码，想要躲开人群，需要隐私，我很难有隐私了。我走在街上都避免跟人目光接触，总是戴着个帽子。我受到如此多的关注，我只想把我自己隔离开来。这个角色的影响力实在太大了。

So it was an tiring and crashing(?), sort of, not prepared the version what I had been trained to do. And that affected me personally. I found having doing it 12 hours a day, 5 days a week as we did the series. On Saturdays and Sundays, it took me a while to shake that off. Very often, I could still feel I was in that mode, all day Saturday, and half the day Sunday. By Sunday afternoon, I can loose up.
拍摄的过程很累人，去演一个我没被训练过的形象。这对我个人有很大影响。我们拍摄电视剧的时候一天工作12个小时，一星期工作五天。星期六星期天的时候我要费点功夫才能摆脱这个。经常我感觉我星期六一整天加星期天半天都仍然处于那个模式中。直到星期天下午我才能放松。
ZQ: So you knew you would be at the work on Monday? Right? 因为你知道礼拜一又要开始工作了，对吗？
LN: Yeah, to start all over again. 对，还要重头来一次。

LN: What’s your experience of that? 你对此有什么经验？
ZQ: Sylar was the first character I played that had that kind of impact on both my personal life and my career. So from a personal standpoint, it was really interesting to have the mojulate(?) , and encountered the same thing you were talking about.
Sylar是我出演的第一个拥有这种影响力的角色，不论是对于我的个人生活还是我的演艺生涯。从我个人角度，这种变化也很有趣，我也遇到了你刚刚说的那种情况。

But it was magnified, because it was not only walking down the street, but also being followed by photographers, and having a whole ocean of eyes on the internet. You know, it’s much more insidious now, unfortunately. And the common denominator of celebrity has been diminished as well. It’s been lowered. So that celebrity dosen’t mean the same thing as what he did, you know, in their 60s, or 70s, or I guess in their 80s.
而且我的情况更加放大了，不只是没法在街上走的问题了，我还被人偷拍、跟踪。网络像一片大海，有那么多眼睛盯着你。不幸的是现在情况更糟了。名人的共同特性也减少了、降低了。现在所谓名流跟在60年代、70年代，甚至80年代，意义完全不同了。

So for me, personally, it was like, as someone who grew up right in that world. I was sort of emersed(?) by the shift of the consciousness in our culture. So it was a really intersting struggle for me, because there were parts of me that were drown to it, there were parts of me as a young kid that wanted to be an actor, a successful actor.
对我而言，虽然我本身就是在这样的环境里长大的，我对大众文化的意识改变也不是很能适应。我陷入一个有趣的挣扎，我有点受到吸引，当我还是小孩子的时候我很想成为一个演员，一名成功的演员。
