Chien Chung-shu, in his performance of superb satirical art, scrutinized the abnormality and morbidity of intellectuals in an older China society in light of his creation of Fang Hung-chien, a vivid figure whose own defects in
character played a dominant role in breeding a tragic fate.
Fang was virtuous and compassionate, wise and humorous. His mental frailty and indecisiveness in addition to lack of both faith in life and awareness of indifference, however, nurtured his fragility in a negative society where he was repeatedly tormented by the heartless others -- being taken advantage of, being trapped in awkwardness, as well as falling pray to undesirable struggles and disputes between factions. This was a deliberation of life personified by the character Fang Hung-chien.
