    Dubstep (70BPM or 140BPM )
Typical artists: Skrillex, Doctor P., Flux Pavillion)
Brostep(现在很多人直接称为dubstep),是一种节奏相同,但中音区占据主导地位,总体听起来更加激烈的一种音乐风格。
Dubstep is another genre that has changed significantly since its inception. Originally darker, brooding music with more rounded tones, it has since evolved into “brostep” which was largely made popular by Skrillex. Brostep (which many simply call Dubstep today) is the same tempo but features harsher, more prominent midrange sounds and more aggressive sonics in general. Focused on intricate drum and kick patterns as well as deep sub-bass lines, the genre alternates between slower sections that feel 70BPM and faster double-time sections that feel 140BPM, depending on song and purpose. Dubstep is all about making speakers produce the largest sonic image imaginable, overwhelming festival and club-goers with a wall of massive sound.

Trap Music (Either around 100BPM or around 140-150BPM )
Typical artists: DJ Snake, Yellow Claw, RL Grime, TroyBoi)
Trap Music is a relatively new form of EDM derived from hip hop. Taking rhythmic cues from the long tradition of hip hop, trap music is heavily bass focused and uses what’s known as an ‘808’ kick drum — a synthetic kick drum known for its earth-shattering bass. Unlike dubstep, the kick drum or 808 produces most of the bass, with an additional bassline only used as a helper. It’s also known for its distinctive hi-hat patterns, rounded elements, and hip hop feel. A typical trap song could be “Shotgun” from Yellow Claw, or “Propaganda” from DJ Snake.

Drum and Bass (Usually around 175BPM )
Typical artists: Noisia, Pendulum, Camo & Krooked)
Drum and Bass is one of the older forms of EDM, which was originally based on a sped up sample of what’s known as the “amen break”. The genre sampled breakbeats from old vinyl records and sped them up for intensity, adding deep basslines and electronic elements. Some variants are harder (Noisia) while other variants are more “atmospheric” and feature stronger melody lines (Camo & Krooked).

Future Bass (Either around 100BPM or around 140BPM )
Typical artists: Chainsmokers, Marshmello, Slushii, Fuzzi Kittenz)
This could be described as “the sound of today’s radio” in EDM, with artists like the Chainsmokers using it to gain massive popularity. It’s melodic, hip-hop based in rhythm, but features simple, almost childish melodies and chords paired with pitched and chopped vocal melodies. In this sense, it’s very pop/radio friendly and widely accessible to audiences young and old, whereas some of the other, more esoteric genres of EDM require a more refined musical palette to appreciate. Future Bass is new, but it’s sweeping the world rapidly, with many big artists (such as R3hab) switching their main genres to support this new trend. Notable examples include “Alone” from Marshmello.

That’s all for this guide, but be warned! We’ve only just scratched the surface here. There are many more sub-genres than are covered here, and this is just the very tip of the iceberg. Fully understanding EDM requires going back decades in musical history, and of course, going to festivals and clubs for years and years is always a great way to feel these differences for yourself!
