Arriving at 17:00 Jan. 11th, I was picked up by my lovely host family and was welcomed by a pack of American popcorn. Though we chatted comfortably, neglecting my poor English, loud hip-pop music was played back, I still feel a little bit nervous staying in a country unfamiliar with and with a new family.
My host family is hospitalized and warm! The kids are cute and easy to get along with. We had a great time together watching movies, having gossip time, doing daily journals, chatting about the education system and even talk about politics! I did many first-time things with them. For instance, I went to the church and went shopping crazily at Costco. As a single child, never had I imagine I could get used to a 4-kid family with all the people busy and rushing, and even with a cute little dog!
As for my volunteer work, it’s a lot more relaxing than I have thought. I volunteer in Oak Trace, a senior community, which is much larger and neater than I expected. I helped the elderly and helped prepare some activities. And there happened to be a B-day party the first day I volunteered when I deeply indulged myself in the performance! Though easy, it’s still not that easy because I feel it challenging to communicate with the elderly. They always have trouble understanding what you are talking about and sometimes don’t think logically!
Besides regular routines, I also had a good time downtown with TKT, visiting Art Institute Chicago, where we spent the whole day appreciating masterpieces and looked back on our high school days. We also chatted about our bottom-heart feelings, which I always regard as a secret. Surprisingly, we stayed at the museum until the last minute! It’s the first time I have been so involved in the artworks and the most impressive time is when we walked into the gallery of Monet. For me, it’s a dream come true! Not only had I been downtown, but I also went to Yorktown Center, a shopping mall, alone, where I always buy happiness with money.
Up till now, this trip is far more interesting than I expected. I had taken the train and the bus here, which is completely a different feeling compared to the public transportations in Shanghai. I had tasted a bunch of delicious food and maybe I shall be worried about my weight then! (I’m still confused why granola bar is regarded as the snack! ) I also got the chance to have a deeper understanding of the American lifestyle, what the word “busy” means, and what is the life we are striving for. I do think that this will have a great impact on me when I go back and continue my studies. I can’t wait to experience more and learn more!
