The table illustrates the proportions of individualincome that was saved from 1989 to 2009 in seven countries, namely Mexico,France, Germany, Italy, Japan, UK and USA.
In 1989, Italy ranked the first with a rate of 29.5%which was also the highest during the three years among all seven countries.18.7% income in France was put aside as savings, making it the second placewith Japan (17.6%) followingclosely behind. However, Mexico was the last among the all, with apercentage of merely 5.6%.
A decade later, Italy still took the lead in the savings rate, but thefigure dropped greatly to 17.6%. While the proportions in Germany, France,Japan and Mexico were slightly different from each other ranging from 13.8% to11.5%. The USA, with a rate of 5.5%, became the country where the least incomewas saved.
By 2009, the percentage in Mexico increased dramaticallyto 19% and rose to the top. Incontrast, the USA (4%) remained the lowest figure of all. The rates inother four countries leveledoff around 11.1% to 13.6%.
Overall, the proportion in Mexico was rising, butother countries experienced a generally declining trend, although France, Japanand the UK recovered a little bit in 2009.
