A crocodile fossil discovered when excavating for the construction of a new School of Science building for Osaka University in 1964. Judging from the geological stratum, it is believed that the fossil dates from 430,000 to 380,000 years before. The fossil has received world recognition as a rare specimen from this period, and upon reexamination by Ryosuke Aoki has been advocated to receive a new biological classification as a new species, i.e. 'Toyotamaphimeia Machikanense.' There are points concerning the scientific name and original state of the fossil which remain unconfirmed and we await the research of specialists on this valuable fossil.

Toyotamaphimeia machikanensis待兼鳄 ,生存于更新世新生代洪积世中期(40万年前),全长8米,是一类早、中更新世生活于亚洲东部的大型淡水鳄类，以鱼类作主食,因气温猛烈下降，而于3000年前在包括中国北部、中部以及朝鲜半岛、日本在内的广大区域内绝灭.(以上内容来吕春晖)
今から数十万年前、第一间氷期の日本、现代よりもかなり温暖でナウマンゾウが出现した顷、西日本にはステゴドンと呼ばれるゾウが栖んでいた.中国とは地続きだったので北京原人も移住してきたかもしれない.その顷の日本の川には非常に大きな、口の细长い、鱼食性のワニが栖んでいた.
1965年、大阪府豊中市待兼山の大阪大学理学部の构内からワニのほぼ完全な化石が见つかった。地名を取ってマチカネワニと名づけられたが、别に待ち兼ねられていたわけではない.当初は现在东南アジアに分布するマレーガビアルに近い种类と考えられたが、最近ではすでに绝灭した别のグループのワニであるという说も出ている.
青木良辅氏(2001)の再検讨により、新属・新种としてToyotamaphimeia Machikanenseとの学名が提唱されている.

Recently I read Wani to Ryû (The Crocodile and the Dragon), a book written by AOKI Ryôsuke, and I found the reason why the dragon is the only imaginary animal among the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac. According to the book, there were machikane crocodiles (Toyotamaphimeia machikanensis), extinct huge crocodiles, in ancient China when climate was warmer than today. They were temperate-zone freshwater crocodiles, and he thinks their northern limit was the river Hàn. They went extinct 3000 years ago in northern China because of sudden cold climate. Chinese people began to mystify the powerful and dangerous animal, and finally the image of the crocodile became the dragon. China's last report on a crocodile was 600 years ago at a place near modern Hong Kong. 
It's not only Aoki who says the origin of the dragon was crocodiles. But former researchers insisted that ancient Chinese crocodiles were estuarine crocodiles (Crocodylus porosus), which live in the tropical zone, and he thinks that is wrong.
