5月17 The drama series will be based on Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski’s fantasy franchise.
Netflix is looking to Polish author Andrzej Sapowski for its next original drama series.
A TV series adaptation of Sapowski's The Witcher fantasy saga has been ordered at the streaming giant.
Known collectively as the Witcher Saga, Sapkowski’s eight novels and story collections follow "witchers" — hunters who develop supernatural abilities at a young age to battle deadly monsters.
Stemming back to the late '80s and early '90s, the New York Times best-selling books have spawned a major video game franchise and have been translated into over 20 languages around the world.
Sapkowski will serve as a creative consultant on the English-language drama, titled The Witcher. Sean Daniel (The Mummy franchise, The Expanse) and Jason Brown (The Expanse) will exec produce along with Tomek Baginski (The Cathedral,The Fallen Art) and Jarek Sawko (The Fallen Art, Another Day of Life) from Polish production and visual effects company Platige Image.
“Andrzej Sapkowski has created a rich and memorable world, at once magical and familiar,” said Netflix vp international series Erik Barmack. “We couldn’t be more excited about bringing The Witcher saga to Netflix members around the world.”
Added Sapkowski: “I’m thrilled that Netflix will be doing an adaptation of my stories, staying true to the source material and the themes that I have spent over thirty years writing. I’m excited about our efforts together, as well as the team assembled to shepherd these characters to life.”
This isn't the first time the Witcher Saga has made the jump from page to screen. His books previously served as the inspiration for the 2001 Polish film The Hexer and the 2002 Polish fantasy series of the same name, which ran for 13 episodes.
