China's popular budget smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi has its eyes set on the U.S..
As reported by Bloomberg after an interview with Hugo Barra, Vice1 President of International Operations at Xiaomi, the company is all set to make an appearance in the U.S. smartphone market "in the near future." The company's sales model will be similar to the ones employed in China and other markets, with most of the strategy revolving2 around online sales and social media marketing3 tactics. Barra didn't yet fix the launch date of Xiaomi's smartphones in U.S., but says it has sold accessories like power-banks and earphones to Americans online and will launch another non-smartphone product in October in the U.S.. In June, Xiaomi announced the acquisition of nearly 1,500 technology patents from Microsoft Corp., a deal which may smooth potential legal tangles4 over intellectual property as it pushes abroad. For now, the largest overseas market for Xiaomi is India, a country with over 1.2 billion people on the cusp of a smartphone boom. Barra told Bloomberg that the online market in India, which has been Xiaomi's primary focus, is growing "very well."
