Like, literally Chinese. Born in China, raised in China, took the Chinese 高考 exam...
And you*re in UChicago....
Talk to people outside of China, damn it.
I can*t count the number of times I tried to talk to Chinese people and ended up being ignored (after a polite "hi", of course). It*s really awkward. If someone talks to you in English, respond. If you huddle in your circle, never venturing out your comfort zone, what*s the point of coming to a U.S. school? You might as well go to Tsinghua, Peking University.......
The "Chinese Chinese" is like an "exclusive" club at UChicago. No one really wants to talk to you because most have had bad experiences trying to communicate with you. There are some exceptions of course, but nevertheless my impression is that it*s hard to be friends with you guys.
So open up, get out of your comfort zone!
