Dick jackson
My knowledge of physics is a mixture of school courses several decades ago mixed with the modern stuff learned or at least witnessed via television and some popular science books. That combination better displays my lack of knowledge than it does enough understanding to assess the validity of the science of the book. But, since it is science fiction, I don*t have to in order to enjoy the book.
Thus, once again, I must buy into the author*s premises and follow them to his conclusions. Most importantly, as with all foreign language books (I*m not multi-lingual), I am at the mercy of the quality of the translation. This book reads unbelievably well in English and flows as smoothly as I would imagine the original did. The translator also included helpful footnotes interspersed to educate the reader about people, places and events mentioned in the story that are based on history.
As the book description tells us, we are not alone in the universe. Of course, we have perhaps believed this for a long time, but in this novel, we now have a specific counterpart. The book description doesn*t tell a lot about what led to this confirmation or what took place next. That*s why we need to read the book. The author goes to unbelievable lengths to set up the details involved in going from looking for life to deciding what to do next, or wonder if we have a choice.
This is the first volume of a trilogy. The second part will be released in English in the summer of 2015 and is The Dark Forest (link below). The third installment will presumably be published the following year and is titled Death*s End (no page or link that I could find).
This was very interesting. It is hard to give a sense of the book without giving away details best discovered from the book rather than a review. It is hard near-future science fiction. The set-up is plausible in a macro sense if not likely in the micro. Following along with the science and the plot takes some work and paying attention.
If you have little or no interest in science, then this would probably not be for you. If you like your science fiction with a heavier than average dose of science, then you should be comfortable reading this. However, a deep familiarity with science is not required to enjoy this story. I read this in far less time than I had anticipated. And, I liked it a lot. I*m sure I*ll grab the other parts when they are issued.
