The Purge, written and directed by James DeMonaco, offered an interesting spin on a survival horror flick. The film followed the family of a security system salesman attacked inside their home during the annual Purge — when crime is legal and emergency organizations are closed. DeMonaco’s followup, The Purge: Anarchy, offered a somewhat less compelling story, though it delivered on satisfying horror thrills… for some filmgoers, anyway.

Did Aquaman Save Superman in *Man Of Steel?*Still, although both films may have left something to be desired for a number of viewers, The Purge and The Purge Anarchy have been financially successful. The movies’ box office sales may be one factor that led to the green light of The Purge 3.
Deadline is reporting Universal Pictures, Blumhouse Productions, and Platinum Dunes are teaming up with DeMonaco for a third installment to The Purge series. DeMonaco will pen the script with an eye to direct the film. Additionally, Sebastien Lemercier, Jason Blum of Blumhouse, as well as Michael Bay, Brad Fuller, and Andrew Form of Platinum Dunes will return to produce.
The Purge franchise has proven to be a financially successful horror series: on a combined budget of $12 million, The Purge grossed $91 million at the worldwide box office and The Purge: Anarchy neared $110 million. It’s but one of multiple low-cost franchises to yield relatively high returns for Blumhouse, alongside the likes ofParanormal Activity.
Given the different stories of the first two Purge movies, it’ll be difficult to predict how DeMonaco will open up the world of his franchise even more. While The Purgefocused on a single family and the events surrounding their night, The Purge: Anarchy focused on multiple groups of people and expanded upon the society’s relationship with the Purge.
What type of storyline – and whether the third film follows a single group or multiple characters – remains to be seen. The movie could expand upon a revelation at the end of the second film about how the government uses the Purge; or, alternatively, the film could follow a group of anti-Purgers.
There are many directions DeMonaco could go with the story in a third film, but it’s almost certain he’ll deliver the violence and quasi-societal commentary fans have come to expect from The Purge series. If it ain’t broke (box office-wise, anyway)…
