Simon Pegg and Nick Frost open cinema at Headley Court
FILM stars Simon Pegg and Nick Frost visited Headley Court to officially open a cinema for injured service personnel. The Shaun Of The Dead stars were among the first to use the 50-seat complex, which was set up by MediCinema, a charity which runs theatres for hospital patients.
The £410,000 facility, which has wheelchair access and shows new releases in 3D, was paid for by the Royal British Legion.
Speaking to the Advertiser, Mr Pegg said: "Cinema can provide a real escapism for people and this new theatre, we hope, can bring a bit of normality to their lives. "It is the chance for these brave servicemen to take a break from the undoubted challenges they face on a daily basis and lose themselves in the wonder world of film. Not only that, they get to do it in real style."
Mr Pegg and his co-star Nick Frost are both patrons of MediCinema.
Mr Frost said "We have seen the room from when it was just an unused squash court full of boxes, so to see it now as this state-of-the-art facility is really amazing.
"The only problem now is that you are going to get civilians knocking on the door asking to use the cinema, and that isn't something I would recommend at a military complex."
One of those who will use the new cinema will be Captain Anna Poole. She injured her leg in 2005 while preparing for qualification to the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics with the British luge team, and had an elective amputation last year.
She said: "The great thing about this is that going to the cinema is just something most people would take for granted, but for people here they might not want to be out in public. "
If you are in a wheelchair or have only got one leg, you might be worried about being looked at or being knocked over but this means we can still go to the cinema in our own comfort zone.
" Royal Marine Cassidy Little, a fellow patient at Headley Court said: "It can get very lonely here and there can be very few things to do in your downtime, which can be very depressing.
"Most of the guys know you can be sitting there staring at the wall most evenings, but now that wall will have films playing on it."
